Engagement Session Tip #1

Tip #1

Your Engagement Session Should Capture the Story Behind Your Love.

The most meaningful engagement photos aren't always taken in the prettiest places. They're taken in places that mean something to you.

When you're planning your engagement session, it's easy to start with the scenery.

You might save photos of beautiful beaches, dreamy fields, elegant architecture, or that one Southern California location you've seen all over Instagram.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting beautiful photographs.

But here's something we'd love for you to think about before choosing your location:

What if your engagement session could tell us something about your relationship?

Because years from now, the location may be beautiful—but the story behind it is what can make the photograph truly unforgettable.

Start With Your Story

Before asking, “Where should we take our photos?”, ask yourselves:

“What places or experiences feel like us?”

Maybe it's the coffee shop where you spent countless mornings together.

Maybe it's the beach where you had your first real conversation.

Maybe it's the neighborhood where you love going for weekend walks.

Maybe it's the restaurant where you celebrate every milestone.

Or maybe it's somewhere completely ordinary that became special simply because you were there together.

These places may not seem significant to anyone else.

But they are significant to you.

And that's what makes them worth photographing.

Your Engagement Session Doesn't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's

There's nothing wrong with a gorgeous beach session or a beautiful outdoor location.

But your engagement photos don't have to follow a formula.

You don't have to recreate someone else's Pinterest board.

You don't have to choose a location because everyone else is photographing there.

And you certainly don't have to make your relationship fit a particular aesthetic.

Instead, think about what makes the two of you the two of you.

Are you adventurous?

Quiet and laid-back?

Always looking for your next date-night spot?

Book lovers?

Foodies?

Movie buffs?

Beach people?

Homebodies?

Let those things become part of your session.

Because when your photographs reflect your actual relationship, they become much more than beautiful pictures.

They become memories.

Southern California Gives You Room to Make It Yours

One of the things we love about photographing couples in Southern California is the variety of stories we can tell.

Your session could be relaxed and coastal.

It could feel urban and modern.

It could take place somewhere surrounded by nature.

Or it could be built around an experience that's completely personal to you.

Maybe your perfect afternoon is walking along the coast before watching the sunset.

Maybe it's exploring a favorite neighborhood.

Maybe it's grabbing your usual coffee and taking a slow walk afterward.

Maybe it's revisiting the place where your relationship began.

There's no single definition of a “perfect” engagement session.

The perfect session is the one that feels like your life together.

Make It a Date, Not an Assignment

One of our favorite ways to approach engagement sessions is to think of them as a date.

Not an assignment.

Not another item to check off your wedding planning list.

A date.

Something you actually want to experience together.

That's the heart behind our Date Night Sessions at Stevie Dee Photography.

If you love books, maybe we find a setting that feels like your favorite reading afternoon.

If you love movies, let's incorporate that part of your personality.

If you have a favorite restaurant or local spot, maybe that's where your story begins.

If you're the couple who would rather explore than stand still, let's go somewhere that gives you room to move.

The more comfortable you are with the experience, the less you'll feel like you're “doing a photoshoot.”

And that's when the photographs start to feel natural.

Don't Underestimate the Ordinary

There's something we hope every couple remembers when planning their session:

It doesn't have to be extraordinary to be meaningful.

Your favorite coffee shop probably won't look like a luxury wedding venue.

Your usual date-night restaurant might not have a dramatic mountain view.

The street you walk down every weekend may not be an iconic Southern California landmark.

But someday, those ordinary places may be the places you miss.

Because life changes.

You get married.

You build a home.

You start new traditions.

Years pass.

And suddenly, a photograph of the two of you sitting in the place where you used to spend your Friday nights becomes something much more valuable than you ever expected.

It becomes a little time capsule.

Your Engagement Photos Are About More Than This Moment

Right now, you're probably thinking about your wedding.

The venue.

The guest list.

The flowers.

The timeline.

The details.

But your engagement session captures a different part of the story.

It's the chapter where you're engaged.

Where you're planning a future together.

Where you still have that exciting feeling of “We're actually getting married.”

That's a season worth remembering too.

And when we photograph your engagement session, that's what we're looking for—not just the perfect pose or the prettiest background.

We're looking for the little things that make your relationship yours.

The way you laugh together.

The way one of you reaches for the other's hand.

The inside jokes.

The quiet moments.

The excitement.

The personality.

The connection.

We Don't Want to Give You Someone Else's Story

As a husband-and-wife photography team, we know that no two relationships look exactly the same.

That's why our approach isn't about taking the same photographs with different couples.

It's about getting to know you, understanding what matters to you, and creating space for your relationship to naturally come through.

We'll guide you.

We'll help you feel comfortable.

We'll give you direction when you need it.

But we also want to leave room for the moments that can't be planned.

Because sometimes the photograph you love most isn't the one you carefully posed for.

It's the one where you were laughing at something only the two of you understood.

So Before You Choose Your Location...

Don't ask only:

“Where will our photos look the best?”

Ask:

“Where will we feel the most like ourselves?”

Maybe that's a beautiful Southern California beach.

Maybe it's your favorite date-night spot.

Maybe it's somewhere connected to the beginning of your relationship.

Maybe it's somewhere completely unexpected.

Wherever it is, let it have a reason.

Because the goal isn't simply to create engagement photos that look beautiful.

It's to create photographs that, years from now, still feel like you.

And that's the kind of story we love telling at Stevie Dee Photography.
