Engagement Session Tip #2
tip #2
How to Choose the Perfect Southern California Engagement Session Location
The perfect engagement session location isn't necessarily the one with the most beautiful view. It's the one where you can picture yourselves having a really good day together.
Southern California makes choosing an engagement session location both exciting—and a little overwhelming.
You have beaches, wine country, desert landscapes, charming downtown streets, gardens, mountain views, and countless places that look beautiful in photographs.
So how do you choose?
Our advice is simple:
Don't start by asking where your photos will look best. Start by asking where the two of you will feel most like yourselves.
Because when you feel comfortable in a place, it becomes much easier to relax, connect, and let your relationship show up naturally in the photographs.
Start With the Kind of Experience You Want
Before choosing a location, think about what you want your engagement session to actually feel like.
Do you want something romantic and quiet?
Fun and playful?
Adventurous?
Casual?
A little more dressed up?
Or maybe you want the whole thing to feel like one of your favorite date days together.
That answer can help narrow down your options.
If you're happiest walking along the coast, a beach session may feel natural.
If you love discovering new places together, an outdoor or scenic location might give you room to explore.
If you love wine country and slow afternoons, a setting around Temecula could feel much more like you than a traditional portrait location.
And if your favorite dates involve wandering through town, grabbing coffee, or stopping somewhere for a bite to eat, there's no reason your engagement session can't reflect that.
Choose a Place That Gives You Something to Do
This is especially helpful if you're worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera.
Instead of choosing a location where you're expected to stand still and smile, think about a place where you can naturally interact.
Walk together.
Explore.
Sit and talk.
Share a favorite drink.
Read.
Dance.
Laugh.
Do something you've actually done together before.
When you're focused on the experience instead of wondering what to do with your hands, the camera becomes much less important.
And those are often the moments where we get the photographs that feel the most natural.
Think Beyond the “Perfect” Southern California Backdrop
Southern California has no shortage of beautiful scenery.
But a beautiful backdrop alone doesn't make a meaningful photograph.
A beach might be gorgeous, but if neither of you enjoys being at the beach, it may not feel like your story.
A dramatic landscape might photograph beautifully, but a simple neighborhood where you spend your weekends could hold far more meaning.
That's why we encourage our couples to think about connection before aesthetics.
Ask yourselves:
Where do we naturally relax together?
Where have we made some of our favorite memories?
What does a great Saturday together look like?
The answers might surprise you.
Let Your Location Reflect Your Relationship
Maybe you're the adventurous couple who loves getting outside.
Maybe you're happiest exploring the coast.
Maybe you love the slower pace of wine country.
Maybe you're city people.
Maybe you're foodies who plan your weekends around where you're going to eat next.
Maybe you're homebodies who would rather grab coffee and walk around your favorite neighborhood than spend the afternoon somewhere elaborate.
There's no wrong answer.
Your engagement session doesn't need to fit a certain aesthetic.
It should fit your relationship.
That's what makes it personal.
And Don't Be Afraid to Tell Us the Story Behind Your Choice
When you have a location in mind, tell us why it matters.
Maybe it's where you met.
Maybe it's where you had your first date.
Maybe it's where you go whenever you need a break from wedding planning.
Maybe it's simply a place that feels like home.
Knowing that story helps us approach your session differently.
We're not just looking for a nice background.
We're looking for ways to photograph what that place means to you.
Sometimes that means slowing down.
Sometimes it means walking instead of posing.
Sometimes it means letting you talk while we quietly observe.
And sometimes it means doing something completely unexpected.
Consider More Than One Setting
You also don't necessarily have to choose just one location.
If you want variety, we can build a session around two complementary settings.
You might start somewhere casual and end somewhere more romantic.
You might begin with a favorite activity and finish with sunset portraits.
Or you could transition from an everyday setting into something a little more dressed up.
The goal isn't to pack as many locations as possible into your session.
It's to create a natural flow that gives your gallery different pieces of your story.
Make It a Date
This is one of our favorite ways to think about engagement sessions.
What if you didn't think of it as a photoshoot at all?
What if you thought of it as a date where your photographer happens to come along?
That's the idea behind our Date Night Sessions at Stevie Dee Photography.
Your session can be built around the things that make spending time together fun.
Maybe it's your favorite restaurant.
A bookstore.
A movie.
A coffee shop.
A brewery or winery.
A walk along the coast.
Or the place where you first met.
You get to experience something that feels like you, and we get to document it.
It's a simple shift—but it can completely change how the session feels.
One Last Question to Help You Decide
If you're still stuck between a few locations, ask yourselves:
“If we had an entire afternoon together with nothing else on our calendar, where would we actually go?”
That's probably your answer.
Because the best engagement session location isn't necessarily the most famous, the most popular, or the one you've seen a hundred times online.
It's the place where you can relax.
Where you can laugh.
Where you can be yourselves.
Where your relationship feels natural.
Your Story Already Has a Place
Your engagement session doesn't need a perfect backdrop to be meaningful.
It needs a setting that gives your story room to unfold.
And whether that means a Southern California coastline, the vineyards of Temecula, a favorite neighborhood, or a place that would mean absolutely nothing to anyone else—it can be the right place if it means something to you.
At Stevie Dee Photography, we believe your engagement session should feel like an experience you actually want to remember—not another wedding task you simply need to check off your list.
Choose the place that feels like you. We'll help you turn the moments there into photographs you'll want to keep.
